When December rolls around, most diners instinctively gravitate towards familiar indulgent roasts, classic European menus or something reassuringly predictable. Instead of leaning into the expected, how about breaking away from tradition and have a Peruvian festive meal?

Against the glowing backdrop of Dempsey Hill’s tropical Christmas, Peruvian restaurant Canchita strikes an effortless balance between celebration and ease. Rooted in Peruvian flavours and helmed by chefs Daniel and Tamara Chávez, the space is lively without being loud, polished without feeling precious. On this particular weekday evening, the festive mood at Dempsey Hill flowed seamlessly into the dining room, where the hum of conversation and the clink of glasses set the tone for a relaxed yet celebratory meal.
We began with the Ceviche Clasico – part of the Dempsey Palate menu at S$88++ per pax. Market fish and Hokkaido scallops were impeccably fresh, dressed in bright tiger’s milk that delivered just the right amount of acidity. Sweet potato added a gentle softness, while the canchita corn provided texture and a subtle nuttiness. It was refreshing, balanced and deeply satisfying, the kind of dish that wakes up the palate rather than overwhelming it.

The Octopus a la Brasa followed, and this was a standout for me. Perfectly grilled, the octopus had that elusive combination of tenderness and char. The avocado parrillera sauce brought a creamy richness, while parsley mayo lifted the dish with freshness. Each element felt purposeful, and together they formed a plate that was both comforting and sophisticated. It was the kind of dish that encourages you to slow down and savour each bite.

For the main course, the Beef Steak “Lomo Saltado Style” was hearty without being heavy. The Australian Westholme rib eye was well marbled and cooked confidently, retaining its juiciness while absorbing the bold, savoury flavours associated with this classic Peruvian stir fry. It was indulgent, but not excessive, a dish that felt fitting for the festive season without tipping into overkill.

Dessert arrived in the form of Alfajores, paired with dulce de leche, roasted pineapple and rum caramel. This was a clever finish. The alfajores were delicate and buttery, the dulce de leche rich but not cloying. The roasted pineapple introduced acidity and warmth, while the rum caramel added depth and a subtle festive note. It was a dessert that felt thoughtfully composed rather than simply sweet for sweetness’ sake.

Each course flowed naturally into the next, and there was a clear sense of restraint and confidence in the cooking. Nothing felt overworked. Instead, the focus was on quality ingredients, clear flavours and an understanding of how diners actually want to eat.
As the festive menus roll out across selected weekends, Canchita stands out as a strong choice for those looking to enjoy something a little different from the usual Christmas fare. The Peruvian flavours feel vibrant and joyful, and the execution is consistently assured.
