Japanese Dining in the Heartlands

0

It is uncommon to find sake available in the heartlands. When I learned that there is a Japanese restaurant offering sake and promising an authentic Japanese dining experience near my neighbourhood, my curiosity got piqued.

Located at the old Broadway Cinema building which has been renovated to the current Broadway Plaza, Japanese restaurant Marugoto Shokudou offers its customers peace and solace away from the hustle and bustle.  With a menu of nearly 140 unique items, the dedicated culinary team aims to spoil their customers.

Thanks to the kind invitation from Marugoto Shokuduo, I had the opportunity to sample their new dishes before it is offered to the public from 15 August 2015 onwards. I had some edamame while waiting for the rest of the media to arrive. I usually don’t like edamame as it is served cold, but this is served hot and that made it taste even sweeter.

Esther Yong, owner and Managing Director of Marugoto Shokudou wants to bring authentic Japanese dining experience into the Singapore heartlands and started Marugoto Shokudou three years ago back in 2012.  To keep the ingredients fresh, ingredients used for sashimi are flown in weekly on every Tuesday and Thursday, which explains the slightly higher price point of the menu.

Pitan (century egg) Tofu

Pitan (century egg) Tofu

The first dish is Pitan Tofu. Pitan is also commonly known as century egg. The century egg and tofu combination is more commonly found in Shanghai or Taiwan. Here we have the Japanese hiyayakko iteration of the dish. Hiyayakko meant chilled tofu with toppings and is often served during the warm months of spring and summer; you can read more about it here

The light but refreshing Buta Shabu-Shabu salad is one of the popular dishes on its current menu.

Oxtail clear-soup ramen

The Oxtail Ramen comes with a clear soup base and assorted root vegetables that reminds me of oden. If you are seeking a clear soup ramen and that meaty glutinous filling, you can give this a shot. The vegetables were too overcooked for my liking but the soup was decent and the ramen was springy.
