The Familiar Strangers’ Reunion Is Back After a Revamp

After a two-week break, Strangers’ Reunion is now back and better than before. With significance influence from the Melbourne’s café culture, the newly revamped Strangers’ Reunion features a bright and clean-cut space, furnished with textured wood tables.

The team behind the café has embarked on a three-week journey to gain an in-depth understanding of Melbourne’s café culture. During their time in Melbourne, they visited and worked at the best local cafes. Taking inspiration from the healthy lifestyle change of co-owner Ryan Tan and the team’s journey to Melbourne, both the revamped space and new menu pay homage to the healthy gastronomic lifestyle in Melbourne. Through the new menu offerings, Ryan hopes to share his “clean eating” beliefs by serving wholesome food to his customers at Strangers’ Reunion.

As the brainchild of award-winning Coffee Champion Ryan, Strangers’ Reunion is definitely no stranger to coffee lovers. The highly-acclaimed Magic (S$5.50) – a double ristretto topped with milk, is said to have the golden ratio of coffee to milk. For those who fancy their coffee to be creamy and smooth, you must not miss out on the chilled bottle of White Magic (S$6.90), a well-balanced combination of fresh espresso shots and milk. If you wish to broaden your coffee insights, try one of their Filter Brews (S$6.90) or join Ryan at one of his coffee masterclasses.

The Honey Mustard Sweet Potato Chips (S$12.90) on their all-day menu is a healthier alternative to potato chips. Crafted from scratch with fresh sweet potato and tossed in honey mustard, the crispy and flavourful chips got me all hooked. It is simply impossible to stop at one.

Available from 9am to 5pm, the new brunch menu features wholesome mains such as the Salmon & Kale (S$19.90). Resting on a bed of organic locally-sourced kale, the pan-seared salmon was ornamented with runny poached eggs, salmon roe and house-made hollandaise. Pan-seared to a perfect brown crisp skin, I was delighted at the fork-tender texture of the salmon fillet. The kale had a slightly sweeter and delicate taste, distinctive from the usual bitter flavour. The addition of the savoury salmon roe was a perfect touch to highlight the sweet and succulent salmon fillet. Strong in both the flavour and texture departments, the Salmon & Kale is definitely one of the best salmon dishes I have ever tasted.

The Strangers Smoked Salmon (S$17.90) is another signature of the new menu that is guaranteed a crowd-pleaser. A twist on the traditional Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict, it features a generous slab of in-house smoked salmon fillet instead of the usual sliced smoked salmon. It was completed with crunchy walnut crumble for extra crunch, feta to heighten the flavour profile, and hazelnut béarnaise sauce drizzle for the perfect balance.

The marriage of generous chunks of crabmeat and potato resulted in the highly-rated Crabcake Reunion (S$18.90). Contrary to the other healthy dishes, it features a beautiful crabcake deep-fried to golden brown. Complemented with creamy avocado chunks, salmon roe, ribbon asparagus and poached egg, the dish was finished with a douse of aburi chive hollandaise. The resulting presentation was visually stunning.

Packed with bright and tangy flavours that pique the palate, the Smoked Chorizo and Melted Cheese Croquette (S$18.50) calls out to those who carry a torch for Mexican cuisine. Lying on a bed of charred corn and capsicum salsa, the croquette is topped off with purple cabbage slaw, fennel mayonnaise and a poached egg. The smokiness of the salsa adds a nice touch to the dish, emphasising its brilliant and distinctive Mexican flavour.

Jumping on to the bandwagon of the healthy smoothie bowl trend, Stranger’s Reunion launched three superfood bowls – Coconut Chia Pudding, Açai Smoothie Bowl and Avocado Smoothie Bowl. All priced at S$11.90++, the superfood bowls are created to satisfy the cravings of the health-conscious crowd. Blended into a thick smoothie consistency and topped with fresh seasonal berries, roasted almonds, pepitas, dehydrated fruit and coconut flakes, the antioxidant-rich Açai Smoothie Bowl is what breakfast dreams are made of.
