Sustainable is hardly a word that one would use to describe an airline’s Business Class, but KLM Royal Dutch Airlines’ World Business Class seat is exactly that.
The Dutch carrier recently introduced its World Business Class seat with new atmosphere, furnishings and style – an undertaking done together with top Dutch designer Hella Jongerius.
To provide an ultimate cabin experience for the passenger, the new full-flat seats with extra storage compartments give passengers optimum comfort, especially during long haul flights.
The refurbished World Business Class cabin also features new carpeting, panel decorations, curtains, lighting, blankets and cushions. Warm colour palettes and sustainable materials are used for the new look. As the world’s most sustainable airline, KLM has used high-quality recycled material such as old KLM stewardess uniforms in making the carpets. The old uniforms were used to spin new yarns, which were then incorporated into the carpet.
“In line with KLM’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy, all new developments such as the World Business Class are not only innovative, but also support sustainability efforts. KLM is one of the first airlines to adopt such approach for its cabin design,” said Nicolas Ricard, Singapore Country Manager for Air France KLM.
The World Business Class seats have been retrofitted into all KLM’s B747 and B777-200 fleets. By the end of the year, it will be available on all of its B777-300s.
