A Supercharged Sunday Brunch at Oscar’s at Conrad Centennial

Sunday to me is a sacred day best spent doing what you love. In that respect, I can’t think of many other things that top having a nice and leisurely Sunday brunch while not having to worry about checking office emails or whether I’m late for my next meeting. Oscar’s at Conrad Centennial Singapore, which has long been known for its hotel buffets has recently revamped their Sunday brunch offerings with some special items I don’t see elsewhere. The revamped Sunday brunch only starts in April but recently, I went for a preview to see exactly what makes them different from other hotels’ Sunday brunch offerings.

If you are a regular at Oscar’s, the first thing you’ll notice is that there are more items to choose from during the Sunday spread as compared to their weekday or even Saturday buffets. The food is arranged in such a way that if you’re coming from the entrance, you’ll get to see the more delectable mains first so that certainly tempted me to dive right in.

The first thing I tried for good measure was the suckling pig. It’s done in cochinillo style, using a younger piglet to derive far jucier flavours especially in the rib portions. Personally, this was my favorite dish. I also learned that Oscar’s will be offering three types of suckling pigs for the Sunday brunch and these will be rotated weekly. Aside from the Argentinian version I had, Mauritian and Chinese-style suckling pigs will also be featured.

Also found in the carving station, the premium “London Duck” is a slight departure from your typical roasts in that the ducks are imported from a farm in Ireland.

A respectable Sunday brunch would of course not be complete without the ubiquitous US Prime Rib.

As a seafood lover, I was fascinated with the cold section which featured no less than four types of oysters hailing from France, Canada and Ireland. Aside from that, I also spotted some snow crabs, prawns, scallops and lobsters.

My favorite section, though, has got to be the sashimi station which featured no less than six types of sashimi. I had thought that five types were already the most I would ever get to see in a hotel buffet, but Oscar’s proved me wrong by including hamachi which I rarely see even when it comes to Japanese-themed buffets.

For those seeking healthier alternatives, the buffet spread at Oscar’s has perhaps the most extensive line-up of healthier options I’ve ever seen in a hotel buffet. I counted no less than 10 types of salads. There was even a veggie-blended drink! If you prefer to make your own salad, there are over 30 toppings to choose from including organic chia seeds, gluten-free mung bean chips and Arame wild seaweed.

The dessert spread was as satisfying as it was pretty to look at. There were quite a few innovative items here such as the liquid nitrogen ice cream which came in sweet potato or vanilla flavors. Personally, I was more inclined to the flambéed crepes suzette which could be topped with more traditional ice cream.
