Rare and Fine Wines in Singapore

Tucked in a quaint little street right at the heart of Singapore’s financial district is the tasting room of Britain’s oldest wine merchant, Berry Bros & Rudd (BBR). Established in the 17th century, BBR has been a supplier to the royal family since the reign of King George III. Today, BBR is also providing access to rare and fine wines in Singapore.

Recently, we were invited to an evening of French wine tasting where BBR curated 26 wines from the various wine regions in France to share with its guests. We were taken on a wine tour of France, in the confines of the tasting room, as we made stops in Burgundy, Champagne, Bordeaux, Loire Valley and Languedoc. All we had to do was swirl, sniff, glug and enjoy.

Armed with a wine list, I decided the sensible thing to do was to narrow down the tasting to a few varietals. Being partial to sweet wines, the highlight of the evening for me was discovering Sauternes. When I laid eyes on the bottles of beautiful burnished gold colour liquid, my heart skipped a beat as it brought back memories of a bottle of late harvest sauvignon blanc I tasted not so long ago. I asked to taste the 1998 Château Suduiraut Sauternes and I must say it was one of the more mellow, full-bodied sweet wines I have tasted.

The BBR staff were happy to share their knowledge with the guests and present that evening was Anne McHale, Master of Wine at BBR in London. She was in town to launch a new book titled “Exploring & Tasting Wine: A Wine Course with Digressions”. The book was created by BBR’s wine school and is available for pre-order on their website. Beautifully produced with lovely photography, it will make a great present for someone who appreciates wine.
