This October, Marina Bay Sands kicks off a series of exhibitions and public programmes developed by the ArtScience Museum to raise awareness on the topic of sustainability. The three eco-themed exhibitions – “Living Yangtze by Eric Valli for Swarovski Waterschool”, “Sensing States: Healing Spaces” and “The Deep” will form the core of the season. Though these three exhibitions are varied in subject matter, all of them will cast the spotlight on environmental issues and highlight the importance of conserving our natural resources.

Living Yangtze by Eric Valli for Swarovski Waterschool

Eric Valli

Taking on a very different approach to corporate social responsibility, Austrian crystal maker Swarovski collaborates with distinguished French film director, photographer and author Eric Valli in a multi-media project called “Living Yangtze”. The collaboration aims to weave a story that can generate empathy and awareness about the importance of clean, sustainable water sources through Valli’s works. Water has been at the heart of Swarovski’s DNA ever since the company was founded 120 years ago and Nadja Swarovski, member of the Swarovski Executive board, believes that Valli’s powerful and insightful work reminds them of the vital importance of water in our daily lives and its role in shaping and supportive communities around the globe.

The Lama and the Ranger

Commissioned to spend six months documenting the lives of communities around the locations of the Swarovski Waterschools along the Yangtze River, “Living Yangtze” portrays the magnificent landscapes and dignified faces of the people that Valli met on his way.

The Swarovski Waterschool China is a not-for-profit organisation which has been working in the Yangtze basin since 2008, teaching children and their families about the importance of clean, sustainable water sources through engaging images and storytelling.

Sensing States: Healing Spaces

“Sensing States: Healing Spaces” is the other exhibition that will form the core of the eco-themed exhibition this October. Commissioned by The Substation Art and Science Open Call, the exhibition is a collaborative process between the recipient of the Open Call Zen Teh and scientific advisor, Ching Jianhong, a true blend of both Art and Science.

Upon entering the exhibition, you will be transported straight to the quietness and calmness of the forest. A Familiar Forest, one of the art installations is complete with sound effects and the sound of leaves. Using drapes, the artist recreates the depth of the actual forest, breaking down the complexity of nature into more palatable pieces allowing appreciators of her work to be at work with her pieces. Zen Teh’s exhibition is truly a treat for the senses and is extremely dynamic in its showcase of being harmonious with the larger environment.

In conjunction with this series, ArtScience Museum has also lined up a series of complimentary sustainability-themed activities such as curator tours during the opening weekend.

The “Living Yangtze” exhibition will open from 10 to 27 October 2015 at the ArtScience Museum.
