Pink Dot 2015

The skies burned with a hot streak of pink last Saturday.

No, it wasn’t the glow of a passing meteor that narrowly missed earth, but rather the collective radiance of 28,000 supporters of the Pink Dot movement in Singapore. This record-breaking congregation of more than 28,000 participants gathered at Speaker’s Corner in Hong Lim Park to show their support for the freedom to love and to form the annual Pink Dot.

With some creative pairing of pink cellophane tape and virtually any source of illumination, pink spots of lights were created by the participants. These lights along with a few strategically placed white lights formed the word “LOVE” in a sea of pink lights.

Pink Dot 2015 started off with Community Voices, a segment where invited speakers shared their personal stories, challenges faced and their hopes for a more inclusive Singapore – Avin Tan’s story of living life as a HIV-positive gay man, Christopher Khor’s journey of family acceptance as a transsexual and Russell Heng’s speech on being gay and elderly were some of the topics raised during Community Voices. I applaud these individuals for their bravery in sharing their personal anecdotes to the many participants of Pink Dot who might have otherwise been unaware of their struggles.

On a lighter note, participants of this year’s Pink Dot were treated to an aural buffet of homegrown talents such as star rapper ShiGGa Shay, acclaimed local indie singer Inch Chua and crowd favorite Gentle Bones. Besides rocking out to the awesome music, the crowd’s adrenaline was kept at an all-time high by the smooth moves of the dance group Plus Point and was kept entertained by the Pink Dot ambassadors Hirzi Zulkiflie and Darren Tan.

“This is where we call home. Where we love. Where we hope. Where we are red, white and all the colours in between.”
