Mad for Matcha? Warabimochi Kamakura’s Third Outlet is Here With New Sweet Treats

By now, you’re sure to have heard of Warabimochi Kamakura; the warabimochi craze that has swept through town. Originating in Japan, these luscious pieces of sticky goodness make the perfect snack, and since arriving in Holland Village in February this year, new outlets have popped up across the city to meet the popular demand.

Now, their third kiosk has taken shape in none other than Takashimaya, the go-to place for all your Japanese goodies. It opened its doors to the public on 29 June, and as an outlet exclusive, they’ve launched yet another dessert-drink flavour- a black sesame warabimochi drink.

A luscious nutty combination of black sesame, soy milk and kinako tossed warabimochi

This unique crossover allows you to savour the silky smooth mochi on the go, paired with your favourite flavours. You can opt to have your drink with fresh Hokkaido milk or soy milk, for an added earthy depth of flavour. It’s smooth and creamy, and paired with the bits of mochi, becomes a decadent party for the tastebuds. Be warned though, the sesame flavour can be quite rich and beany, but it’s sure to satisfy the goma enthusiast in your life.

Pair your mochi with Asakawa-en Matcha, available in 5 or 10 piece boxes

Matcha lovers will also be thrilled to find that the warabimochi itself now comes in a matcha version, also a Takashimaya outlet exclusive. The matcha warabimochi comes in a 2pc cup or a 5/10pc box if you’re opting to share (even if you keep it all to yourself, we completely understand- it’s that good!).

Grab mouthfuls of goodness with their two-piece matcha warabimochi in a cup, topped with a scoop of ice cream

Similar to their original cup warabimochi, you can also pair it with a scoop of ice cream. The mochi and ice cream are coated with a combination of high grade kinako and Asakawa-en Matcha powder, an ideal flavour combination that cools the warmest of days. Matcha can sometimes overpower with its overt bitterness, and as a team-Hojicha girl, I was initially hesitant to give it a try- only to find the combination really pleasing and nutty instead. Drizzle the chewy chunks of warabimochi with a few drops of their brown sugar sauce, and it becomes hard not to devour the entire cup in a single mouthful.

Each piece of warabimochi is carefully hand-tossed and cut on site

The warabimochi pieces are skilfully kneaded, cut and tossed by hand, which are generously sized and offer a perfect texture for midday munchies. Watching the staff in action may be just as addictive as the food itself. The next time you’re in the area, pop by and savour these new flavours yourself. Don’t let the queues deter you, they move quick and they’re so worth it- it’s only a sign of how good it is.
