The Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel is almost an iconic hotel — nobody could miss it at Orchard Road. Centrally located in the heart of Singapore’s prime shopping and entertainment district, the octagonal-shaped building and its green-tiled pagoda roof stand out the most amongst other buildings in the vicinity. Of course, when one mentions Marriott, I would be expecting nothing short of world-class hospitality and living spaces during my staycation.
The exceptional space was seen right after I step into the 5-star hotel lobby’s entrance. The large and airy lobby evoked a casual yet posh vibe for guest to work, relax or simply wine and dine while staying in Singapore. One of the main focus was the dramatic large-scale Asian-inspired fretwork setting the backdrop for the front desks, that makes the mundane check-in process a tad bit more interesting as guest admire the intricate artwork, or maybe that was just me.
It didn’t take me long to check into the Premier Deluxe Room located on the 18th floor. Once the room door swung open, I was pretty amazed with how spacious 32sqm actually can be. The luggage stand that was usually by the door was smartly concealed in one of the two wardrobes that line the walkway into the main area of the room, and the study desk was also customised to fit into the octagonal-walls of the hotel.
What impressed me the most was the handwritten guest note on the bathroom door that really brightened up my entire day as it was unexpected, simple, yet really heartwarming. I really enjoy the little things in life, and I think it is in these small gestures that you can really see that the hotel is trying to extend a personal welcome to all their guest.
Last but definitely not the least, request for a city-facing room to get a bird’s eye view of Orchard Road and daily sunsets. The strategic location of the hotel and my room allowed me to recline on the signature 1956 leather Eames Desk Chair while I sip hot tea and simply unwind to the sun setting in the horizons – the perfect place to be while escaping the daily grind without having to leave the country.
While enjoying a staycation at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, remember to head on a gastronomic journey within any one of the restaurants. Prior to check-in, I headed to Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant for a sumptuous lunch spread. Dim Sum lovers will enjoy the Steamed Scallop & Morel Mushroom Dumpling but my personal favourite were the Double-boiled Cordyceps Flower Consommé with Lobster & Egg White for soup, and the Baked Cod Fish with Egg White for my mains.
Early next morning, I headed to Marriott Cafe located on the ground floor for a hearty breakfast. Patrons get to enjoy the freshest International buffet spread throughout the day, be it for breakfast, lunch, tea break or dinner. Even at breakfast, the cafe is fully stocked with Asian delights, English breakfast choices, pastries, salad bar, cold cuts and cheeses… and even desserts.
