Are you a foodie who has a hearty appetite and finds most meals leaving you wanting more after eating? If so, The Diner by The Travelling COW might just be the place for you.
Tucked away on the second level of CT Hub in Kallang area, this was not an easy place to find. However, the food was indeed worth the search.
For starters, I had the Oriental Chicken Salad, Cheese/ Chilli Crab Nachos and Truffle Mac & Cheese Balls. The Oriental Chicken Salad ($8) was topped with generous portions of chicken slices and tossed with Japanese Cucumber and tomatoes. Drizzled with the chef’s special dressing, this salad was indeed a nice start to my meal.
The Cheese/ Chilli Crab Nachos ($6) was also rather unique. Nachos with Chilli Crab Sauce? That was a first for me. The sauce tasted just like the Chilli Crab sauce at any ordinary seafood restaurant. Drizzled with cheese and filled with bits of crab meat, I could not resist but take one nacho after another. In fact, I had finished the entire plate pretty soon!
If you are a fan of truffle and macaroni & cheese, the Truffle Mac and Cheese Balls (S$8) will be sure to delight you. As you bite into the crispy texture of the balls, macaroni and cheese literally ooze into your mouth. If you chew this slowly, you can even taste that hint of truffle added to this delightful dish.
Now, on to the mains. One of the most popular dishes at The Diner by The Traveling COW is its Ramen Bulgogi Short Rib Burger (S$15). With ramen in place of your usual bread, mixed with lettuce, tomatoes and short ribs, this had to be my favorite dish. I especially liked how soft the short ribs were and how the crispy ramen burger perfectly complemented the ingredients. A generous serving of fries are also served on the side to complete the dish.
Apart from its burgers, this place has some really unique pasta dishes. What is great about The Diner by The Traveling COW is that it caters to individuals, like me, who have small appetite for eating but a huge appetite for trying out everything. If you are like me, opt for the Pasta Platters, which allows you to choose from any two (S$18) or three ($24) types of pastas.
The pasta dishes offered here are indeed a fusion of Western and our Singaporean culture. I decided to go with the Pasta Platter with Seafood Laksa Pasta, Chilli Crab Pasta and Bak Kwa (Chicken) Carbonara.
The Bak Kwa (Chicken) Carbonara was my favourite. As some of you may have experienced, eating too much Carbonara can leave you feeling rather overwhelmed. Perhaps it’s all that cream sauce. However, the serving in this platter was just right and I especially enjoyed eating my pasta mixed with the runny egg and its hints of Bak Kwa. After this, l will opt for Bak Kwa over bacon in my pasta any day.
As for the Seafood Laksa Pasta, it tastes just like your ordinary laksa. With its generous servings of prawns, squids and fishcake, be prepared to get your laksa fix, only this time with pasta.
Finally, the Chilli Crab Pasta is literally pasta mixed with Chilli Crab sauce and topped with crab meat. While this was an interesting combination for me, it was way too spicy for me. So if you cannot take spicy food, you may want to choose from the many other delights on the menu.
Overall, I really enjoyed my dining experience at The Diner by The Traveling COW. Reasonably priced dishes, no service charge and huge portions, what’s not to love about this place?
