Drum Tao: Hyakkaryoran Hanabi

For a unforgettable night at the theatres, Drum Tao’s Hyakkaryoran Hanabi should be at the top of your to-watch list this year. Performed by a group known for its creative and artistic interpretation using the traditional Japanese drums known generally as Tai Ko, Drum Tao has won numerous accolades including America’s Tony Award and has even performed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

It is not tough to see why this show is highly recommended. Its high production values can be easily seen through the set design, costumes and light manipulation that worked seamlessly with the action and music on stage. With perfect combintion between the music from Japanese traditional musical instruments and the beautiful dance choreography by the performers, they are able to convey various emotions. You can sense the joy and happiness in one scene, and then anger and aggression in another when two groups are pitted against each other as though there is a “drum-off”.

One particular enchanting scene is when the male dancer was woken up from the slumber and took to a dance sequence using a lengthy piece of organza and throw it through the air while performing his graceful movement on stage. I have never seen a more beautiful way to showcase the human physique. The audience was thoroughly entertained between major scenes too with hilarious antics and upbeat music. There was never a dull moment throughout the whole show.

Drum Tao’s performance is the epitome of what a good stage design, costumes, light, modern dance and music that comes together to envelope the viewer with the best visceral experience ever. This show is best enjoyed in person. It is of little wonder they are watched and loved by 6.5 million people.
