Bored of the usual Christmas? Why not have a Crazy Christmas this season and mark your calendars for Dream Academy’s “CRAZY CHRISTMAS – A groundNUTCRACKER”?
Dim Sum Dollies, Broadway Beng, Kumar – these are all familiar names in the Singapore performing arts scene. I’ve personally heard amazing things about these actors – funny, silly and hilarious – but never got to witness them for myself. However, it was only through watching “CRAZY CHRISTMAS – A groundNUTCRACKER” on 11 December that I realised our locals truly have talent, crazy talent.
So what can you expect from “CRAZY CHRISTMAS – A GroundNUTCRACKER”? In short, it is a lot of singing, dancing, fanciful stage props and performers all decked to the nines. Not forgetting lots of laughs, of course.
The show had numerous funny moments and hilarious characters that I wish I could have seen more of. However, one of my favourite moments had to be Pamela Oei from the Dim Sum Dollies portraying the life of a bat. Be prepared to laugh your hearts out as Pam shares the heartaches of being a bat and puts a twist to Adele’s “Hello”. Trust me, you will be blown away by her vocals and tickled by her performance!
Another of my favourite moments was Kumar’s appearance as Santa’s elf. I especially love how Kumar was able to tickle his audience so effortlessly. With his witty humour and sarcasm (and signature sexual innuendos), I found myself empathising and laughing with him as he shared his struggles of being Santa’s elf. I, however, thought his on-stage time too short and found myself wanting to see more of him.
There were indeed many hilarious moments throughout the show but I shall not spoil it for you. Most importantly, what tugged my hearts during the show was its emphasis on the true spirit of Christmas. Personally, I was expecting this production to be an ordinary Christmas musical with some laughs. However, the show went one step further; it reminded us to reflect on the origins of Christmas – celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
The show finally ended off with a bang with an acapella Christmas medley specifically crafted for the audience and Christmas songs sung together with Nanyang Primary School choir. As the show came to an end, I made a mental note to check out more of the Dream Academy’s productions in time to come.
