6 Cafes to Seek Out in Serangoon and Kovan

0

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to enjoy a hearty breakfast late in the morning and chat over a great cup of coffee? That’s what we absolutely adore doing, and it pretty much sums up why the cafe culture has gained so much traction over the past couple of years.

Today, there are so many cafes to visit, even in the heartland areas of Singapore. The Serangoon and Kovan neighbourhoods are two places where there are cafes aplenty. We shortlist these six tried-and-tested cafes worth visiting in our books.

Lola’s Café

Many people have already heard of this café; just do a Google search for eggs benedict and Lola’s Café will pop up often. Lola’s Café is a very very popular place. The cafe is conveniently located and easy to get to via both public and private transport. Queues are not uncommon, but you don’t have to wait too long to get a seat. There’s also an electronic queue system for you to leave your contact number in case there are too many people and you don’t want to wait around in front of the store.

We recommend their Avocado Eggs Benedict (S$15), Breakfast Butter Croissant (S$14) and the much-raved Honey Paprika Wings (S$10). The Eggs Benedict we ordered got us two perfectly poached eggs sitting atop a buttery brioche with a generous serving of ham and avocado.

Of course, no brunch can be complete without coffee. Try their Iced Latte (S$5.50) to beat the heat in Singapore, or go for the mocha (S$6, iced) if you crave something sweet. There’s no GST and service charge at Lola’s café, so go on and enjoy!

It would almost be a sin to mention Lola’s Café without talking about Ice Edge Café. This café is located just a short two minutes’ walk away from Lola’s Café, and is famous for their waffles served with artisan gelato. Be prepared to be spoilt for choice when you’re there as they have 34 different flavours of gelato that you can choose from. Also, don’t miss out on their fabulous one-for-one lunch promotion which is available on weekdays, from 12pm to 3pm.

Ciel Pâtisserie

This quaint café is a hidden little gem in the Kovan neighbourhood and it is definitely one of our top places to visit for cakes. The cakes are freshly made by a dessert chef trained at the famed Le Cordon Bleu Paris, and are consistently excellent.

We recommend the Bombe (S$5.80 per slice) and the Fuji (S$5.20 per slice). The Bombe is a molten chocolate shell encasing a luxuriously smooth and creamy mousse interior. Fresh blueberries are hidden within each mouthful, balancing the flavours wonderfully. Together with a crispy hazelnut feulletine base, this rich and decadent French dessert may be extremely sinful, but is so worth every single calorie. Cleanse your palate after with the wide range of teas which the café offers at an very affordable price (S$2.60).

Ciel Pâtisserie, 124 Hougang Ave 1, #01-1444 Singapore 530124, Tel: +65 6383 0803, Opens daily except Mondays.

Wimbly Lu needs no introduction, especially for those who live in the northeast area of Singapore. Once you are along the quiet street of Jalan Riang, you won’t miss this café with the red vintage Volkswagen Beetle parked right outside the café.

Wimbly Lu Waffle
The café is famous for their waffles and root beer cake with ice cream. There are savoury items on the menu as well, so you can definitely visit to get a substantial meal with desserts after. The waffles (S$8.50 with a single scoop of ice cream) are highly recommended if you are visiting for desserts. Their ice creams are home-made, and come in a great variety of flavours. We love the honey cinnamon flavour which is subtly sweet and goes perfectly well with the fluffy waffle.

Just a stone’s throw from Serangoon MRT station lies Sunday Market, a bustling café which prides itself for serving up dishes with a local twist. Try their Beef Rendang Lasagne (S$15.90) for that special take on our local favourite, or if you prefer something less localised, go for their Ohayo Burger (S$16.90) or Spaghetti Ala Carbonara (S$14.90). There’s also a great variety of deserts, snacks and drinks for those looking for just a quick bite.
