Nampu at Grand Hyatt Bali: Wagyu Rare Fare

Finding a decent Japanese restaurant in Bali is not a difficult task. In fact, the Japanese were among the first visitors that came to the island during the tourist boom in the 1980s until now. So, it only made sense that the then-Japanese-now-Balinese residents opened up small to mid-sized restaurants serving food close to their hearts and palate. The hotel dining scene tries to keep up with this Japanese demand and eventually appeal to not only the traditional tourists, but also to basically, anyone who appreciates the delicate art of beautiful plating and the freshest of ingredients.

Nampu, which is located inside Grand Hyatt Bali, has been a well-known haunt with the hotel guests and residents in the surrounding Nusa Dua area long enough. It’s not just proximity that keeps guests coming back, I learned recently; it’s their Kiwami Wagyu cut steaks that are cooked to perfection, and deserve the word ‘fantastic’.

Up next, the main attraction – the main course of steak. True to its origins, Nampu is not one of those teppanyaki restaurants that boast chef’s performance as the main act. When asked about this question, Chef Yoshioka Shozo referred me to the establishments in Park Hyatt in Tokyo or any five-star Japanese teppanyaki that do not do fire-and-chopping shows at all. And that’s what I experienced.

The chef was at his zone, harmoniously cooked the wagyu at a set time and spot on the teppan, chopped the beef through the marble and gracefully presented the plate. Presentations were made simple, just the way I liked it.

My wagyu was served shortly after I saw them rested on the teppan side, proud and opulent on the plate and smelling heavenly. Despite having deliberately opted for a low to medium marble score of 5-6, the meat was incredibly tender with a buttery aftertaste.

In a nutshell, I’d recommend dining at Nampu as it is well worth a visit, not least for the stunning resort setting (come early for dinner to catch Grand Hyatt’s sundown at Nusa Dua Beach). Dining in the restaurant is like paying homage to Osaka’s countryside; indeed a Japanese affair from the tatami, rustic Japanese Izakaya style and ample teppanyaki kitchens. The food packs an equally impressive bash and it is without doubt a safe haven for teppanyaki fans.
