I’m not much of a burger fan (except for McDonald’s McSpicy) so I haven’t been to the much-raved Potato Head Folk restaurant situated at Keong Saik Road in Singapore. Thank goodness being late is better than not being there at all, although I am sure I’ve been missing out on a lot.
During my recent and first visit to the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised by the entire decor and atmosphere. The whimsical theme and childlike mural drawings on the walls complemented well with the hearty meals served and cosy seating arrangement (it’s not a very big space). I will not go into detail with regard to the cafe and the permanent menu. Instead, I will be sharing on the 2015 Christmas specials served up by the lovely team at Potato Head Folk.
With Christmas around the corner, Chef Adam Penney have created (from scratch) a “Christmas with the Folks” menu.
Rudolph Killah (Roast Face Killah)
The Rudolph Killah (S$30) has oodles of ingredients – Fallow venison and Japanese pork patty, colton basset stilton, griddle gem lettuce, red cabbage pickle, bawang goreng, mure and cocoa aioli – all served in a toasted dark chocolate brioche bun and with a side of honey and thyme seasonal roasted vegetables.
I am almost classified as a carnivore, but the flavours of all the ingredients blended together tasted so well (and this includes the vegetables) that I munched down everything within 10 minutes or so. For some reason, this burger really does feel like Christmas in my mouth; it was such a good and hearty main to have. I imagined eating this on a cold and rainy night.
I used to think that only warm food, especially soup or steamboat, could come across as a hearty meal but after trying this dish, my opinions have altered 180 degrees. I could even imagine myself eating this on a cold wintery Christmas night, but alas, there is no winter in Singapore.
What’s more, for every burger ordered, S$1 will be donated to the Singapore Children’s Society. Now that’s what I call a Christmas spirit!
Mac Daddy
I did not get to try this dish, but thought it’d be worth a mention. This is definitely a dish for truffle lovers – the Mac Daddy (S$15) essentially truffle macaroni and cheese – macaroni shells covered and gratinated with truffled triple cheese sauce, shaved truffle, truffle oil and chives. Being a major truffle fries lover, I will definitely return in the month of December to grab both the burger and this mac and cheese dish.
Ho Ho Homey
Alcoholic lovers, Ho Ho Homey (S$9) would definitely be your thing. This dessert is made up of Three Buns Christmas pudding, brandy and brown butter ice cream patty, and served in a toasted panettone brioche bun. I felt the Brandy was drowning the flavours of the brioche bun and home-made vanilla ice cream. The Christmas pudding was however surprisingly good, with a mixture of coconuts, raisins, figs and other interesting ingredients. Less alcohol, more ice cream and that would be my definition of a perfect dessert.
In line with the Christmas spirit, Potato Head Folk will be collaborating with Asia’s first social enterprise gourmet food truck to spread some mid-week joy to the people working around Raffles Place. The “Three Buns Flippin’ Tour’ Truck” will be serving up signature burgers and fries at Ocean Financial Centre from 18 to 20 November 2015, 11 am to 3 pm. Head Chef Adam and Chef Gabriel will be preparing these sumptuous burgers themselves so do remember to pop by and grab one of these bad boys!
