This October, kabuki fans are in for a treat. Ebizo Ichikawa XI, scion of Japan’s oldest kabuki family, returns to Singapore for a limited three-performance run of two plays – Uwanari and Mimasi Kuruwa no Kasauri.
Uwanari, which means “second wife” and “jealousy”, tells the story of a man who remarries, while his jilted wife fumes and plots her revenge against her ex-husband and his new family. First performed in 1699 by Danjuro Ichikawa I, this classic play evokes jealousy, hate and love. Audience will be enthralled by the passion and emotion.
Along with Uwanari, Ebizo Ichikawa XI will be debuting a brand new piece – Mimasi Kuruwa no Kasauri – in Singapore. Set in Edo (former name for Tokyo), the performance is centred around an umbrella seller in the Yoshiwara district, and how he fights against the bullying ruffians who are jealous of his business. Be prepared for a dazzling display of athletic prowess.
Watch Ebizo Ichikawa XI revives the ancient Uwanari play and charm you with Mimasu Kuruwa no Kasauri. You will not only be amazed and delighted by one of Japan’s best living kabuki practitioners, but will also have the opportunity to witness history being made.
