A Taste of Nanyang and a Tinge of Western at 1933

Situated near City Hall MRT station, Capitol Piazza has completed most of its renovation works. The revamped building now hosts many international F&B brands, all debuting in Singapore for the very first time. BreadTalk Group has also jumped onto the bandwagon with its Southeast Asian inspired restaurant, 1933.

More than anything else, I was blown away by the stunning décor of 1933. A four-tier dessert counter filled with pretty-looking tarts and croissants adorns the entrance of 1933, which is located at Level 1 Galleria in Capitol Piazza. For diners with sweet tooth, you can go for a selection of these desserts, on top of 1933’s starters, soups and mains.

1933 also boasts a second level, donned with intricate lightings across the ceilings. It is when night falls that this level truly comes alive, exuding a “rooftop bar” ambience where diners can relax for an after-work meal and drinks –yes, 1933 serves a wide range of drinks from latte to milkshakes to lemonade and cocktails.

Décor aside, 1933 offers an encompassing range of Asian and Western cuisines, a best of both worlds.

For starters, I had Sawadee Greens (S$9.80). The first mouthful of this Asian salad was a burst of refreshing flavours. Unlike most other salads I have tasted, this Thai-styled seafood salad had the perfect sauce to go with it, with a drizzle of lime juice. The ingredients – prawns, minced chicken, peanuts – were generously blended together. If you are bored of the mundane western salads with mayonnaise or vinaigrette dressing, I’d strongly recommend this.

Power Carrot

For soup, I had Power Carrot (S$9.60). Served in a round bread bowl, this carrot soup appeared to be more appetising than any carrot soup I’ve ever tried. The taste didn’t disappoint as well. Besides carrot chunks, there was a hint of orange zest to lighten the heaviness of the cream and butter. The best part of this dish is the bread bowl. Despite having been soaked with the soup, the bread remained crisp – indeed, BreadTalk lives up to its bakery name. However, as a healthy consumer, I would’ve preferred my bread to be whole/multigrain, instead of white baguette.

For the mains, I had 1933’s specialties: Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice (S$16.80), Nanyang Curry Chicken and Grilled Pork Loin.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

Hainanese Chicken Rice

The protagonist of any chicken rice is its steamed chicken. At 1933, kampong chickens are selected for its extra tender and less oily meat, cooked at sub-boiling temperatures and bathed in cold water to retain the flavour and texture of the meat. Nonetheless, the price point might be a turn-off for some diners. This portion of chicken rice only serves one and if you’re not that particular about the meat, you could definitely get a similar chicken rice set at a more affordable price elsewhere.

Nanyang Curry Chicken

You know that your curry chicken is done well if it is reminiscent of Grandma’s cooking. And yes -1933’s Nanyang Curry Chicken (S$14.90) scored points for that. Kampong chicken meat, potato chunks and carrots are simmered in a perfectly-cooked curry with just the right amount of coconut and spices. Once again, the bread bowl didn’t disappoint as well.

I wouldn’t dare label myself as a food connoisseur, but the very least criteria for a successful grilled pork loin is the tenderness and juiciness of its meat. Sadly, 1933’s Grilled Pork Loin (S$26.80) was overcooked; it was hard on the outside, and a tad too dry on the inside. Served with a relatively small portion of sautéed potato in olive oil and tomatoes, I find that this dish wasn’t pegged at a reasonable price as well. Even though the aesthetics of the grilled pork loin deserves a thumbs-up, I would not recommend this dish.

1933’s lemonade (S$8) is one of their specialty drinks. I loved the refreshing taste of the lemon chunks and strawberry bits blended together.
