HOKA Clifton PRO: Plush Comfort Meets a More Responsive Ride

0

HOKA®, the fitness brand known for its shoes maxi thick soles, has launched the Clifton PRO, a performance trainer that allows for maximum control, yet is versatile enough for everyday running, training and even walking. Positioned as a more progressive evolution of HOKA’s much-loved Clifton series, the Clifton PRO introduces new PROGLIDE+ technology in a sleeker, more streamlined silhouette.

To mark the Clifton PRO’s arrival,  HOKA® Singapore hosted a launch event at FORGED by RF (Citylink Mall). Fitness influencers and media were invited to try the Clifton PRO on a guided 5km test run through the city.

I have never worn HOKA before, although I’m familiar with the brand’s reputation of pioneering the maximal cushioning movement with its extremely thick soles.  Following a bout of health issues and 10% weight gain last year, I now pay attention to protecting my joints more than ever, even as I try my best to continue my running routine. I leapt at the opportunity to run with the Clifton PRO and the moment I slipped my feet into the shoes, I found it was extremely comfortable and fit securely like a glove – no breaking-in period needed!

Fans of HOKA’s Clifton series value its balanced approach that allows the lightweight model to still deliver great cushioning and support, qualities which explain why it remains a beloved staple since it was first launched in 2014. This time round, HOKA has taken an interesting approach to launch the Clifton PRO just after the Clifton 11, with the former priced at just about $10 more. The key difference between the two models lies in the Clifton PRO’s new PROGLIDE+ midsole, which combines a Supercritical Fluid foam with a refined MetaRocker™ design. The latter delivers a more responsive ride feel along with faster heel-to-toe transitions that helps boost responsiveness and agility for tempo runs and performance outcomes.

During the flat and easy-paced run through Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay area, my  introduction to the Clifton PRO was very positive. The immediate plush feel and fit were already a triumph as my very broad and thick feet do pose a real challenge and I rule out many shoes due to discomfort. Not only did the Clifton PRO accommodate my feet well from the outset, I also felt that the shoe was noticeably responsive to give me a momentum boost with each stride forward.

Following the run, we returned to FORGED by RF, where were able to test our running gate through personalised 3D gait analysis and force plate assessments to evaluate our biomechanics and shoe compatibility, which included other HOKA shoe models available onsite. I tried the Clifton 11 (also fit me like a glove once I stepped in!) in addition to the Clifton PRO. I was told that I am a heel striker with not much speed but fortunately little potential for injury. We found that at least for my personal running gait, the Clifton 11 would return more energy than the Clifton PRO, but the latter would provide me with better shock absorption for everyday running. This was fine by me to address my concerns as I do not have a competitive streak when it comes to fitness.

To support us with a complete recovery session, HOKA arranged for a healthy breakfast, and specialised hydration from Realm. The event concluded with  an immersive session for some at Shelter, which offers rest and recovery via a range of treatments including hot saunas, cold plunges, warm pools and also compression therapy. If only one could be lucky enough to experience this full gamut of wellness to soothe sore muscles after every long run or intensive workout.
