Beat the Heat with Shaved Ice at Smoothie House

Good news for dessert lovers — popular Taiwanese ice dessert shop Smoothie House has finally landed in Singapore. Originating from Taipei’s bustling Yong Kang Street, Smoothie House is famous for its ‘snowflake’ dessert and serves more than 1000 bowls of ice desserts daily to tourists and locals in its home country. In fact, it is regarded by CNN as a “must-try” dessert place in Taiwan.

The long queue outside the shop on its first day of opening on 6 May was testament to how popular Smoothie House is. We were seated next to aa Australian lady here on vacation with her family and she couldn’t stop gushing about how good the shaved ice was. Looks like it’s popular with the tourists too.

With fond memories of my first Mango Shaved Ice in Taipei years ago, I admittedly have high expectations for Smoothie House’s best-seller – the Mango Snowflake Ice.

Mango Snowflake Ice with Panna Cotta

The Singapore’s rendition of Mango Snowflake Ice with Panna Cotta was nothing short of refreshing and a perfect respite from the perpetually hot and humid weather in Singapore. This bowl of mango shaved ice built mountain-high, topped with big chunks of sweet mangoes and panna cotta is as flawless as ice dessert can go.

Yoghurt-Berry Snowflake Ice

This gorgeous-looking bowl of Yoghurt-Berry Snowflake Ice is as healthy as it is Instagram-worthy. Made from yoghurt shaved ice and covered with fresh bananas, strawberries, and mulberries, this one comes remarkably close to one of my favorite go-to desserts, the frozen yoghurt. I especially like the topping of a tangy mulberry sauce, and the super chewy tiny mochis sprinkled all over and inside. Now, if only it was a tad less sour.

Tie Guan Yin Milky Snowflake Ice

The latest addition on the menu, the Tie Guan Yin Milky Snowflake Ice, would appeal to all tea lovers out there. I could actually taste the fragrance of the tea permeating through the creamy milk shaved ice covered with freshly cooked mixed pearls and cooling tie guan yin jelly. The dessert came with a tiny tea-cup of black sugar syrup for you to drizzle onto the ice, but I thought it was just the right amount of sweetness without the syrup. Either way, you get to determine how sweet you want your dessert to be so nobody’s complaining.

The snowflake ice comes in three different sizes: Healthy Size (S$7.90), Sharing Size (S$9.90), and Family Size (S$15.90).
