You’ve most likely heard of heritage sites recognised by UNESCO, but how about a performance act? Well, the Catalan tradition of castell building (or building a human tower) is one such act that were officially recognised by UNESCO as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2010. Some 290 castellers from the Minyons de Terrassa in Spain flew into Singapore to perform for the very first time in Southeast Asia.

Qatar Airways, in collaboration with Catalonia and Barcelona City and Region Tourism Boards, and the City Hall of Terrassa, welcomed the castellers who performed their gravity-defying human tower routines at Raffles Place and Kidzania Sentosa over the past two days. The castellers stood on one another’s shoulders in a succession of stages, going up to as high as 12.5 metres in the air. day-2-kidzania_2

The origins of this Catalan tradition of castell building dates back to the 18th century.

“Qatar Airways is delighted to team up with Catalan Tourism Board to bring this UNESCO-recognised Human Towers performance to Singapore for the very first time. Through this unique cultural and heritage activity, we hope to showcase a lesser known side of Catalonia and to inspire travellers to visit Barcelona and its surrounding Catalonia area on their next vacation,” said Jimmy Sng, Qatar Airways Country Manager Singapore.

If you want to fly to Spain to witness the performance yourself, good news – Qatar Airways are offering special fares to Spain starting from S$945 are available from now till 24 October 2016. Fares are valid for travel until 30 June 2017.
