Singapore has placed itself among the top in a global ranking again, and this time, it’s for not getting enough vacations.

According to an annual survey done by travel site Expedia, Singapore is the second most vacation-deprived nation in Asia-Pacific and the third most in the world. The survey revealed some 70.8% of Singaporeans saying they feel very or somewhat vacation-deprived.

The main reasons given by Singaporeans for having no vacations include:

  • Cancelled vacation due to work (45.1%)
  • Work schedule does not allow for vacation (33.2%)
  • Carrying over to the following year for a longer vacation (29.7%)
  • Difficulty in coordinating with travel partner’s schedule (23.1%)
  • Lack of money (20%)

The survey also found out that Singaporeans work 43.8 hours a week on average, with 52.6% working between 41 and 50 hours a week.

Singaporeans appear to be motivated by monetary rewards more though, with seven in 10 respondents sharing that they would rather take a pay rise than have more vacation days.

One bright spark in the survey is that Singaporeans know how to optimise their vacation time. About 52.1% said they start relaxing the moment they go on a vacation.

The survey is the results of the 2015 Vacation Deprivation study, an annual study of vacation habits across multiple countries and continents. It was conducted among 7,855 employed adults aged 18 and above across 25 countries. A total of 356 respondents from Singapore took part in the survey.
