Get Your Percussion High with Drum Tao’s Latest Show

1

If you are into bass overload, Drum Tao’s latest production at the new theatre of MediaCorp Campus will surely get your heart thumping and adrenaline rushing. Called Hyakka Ryoran Hanabi, the show will present Drum Tao’s explosive mixture of sound and action that will enthrall those who are into percussion performances.

What’s more, the show is produced with the creative trio of Director Amon Miyamoto, Costume Designer Junko Koshino, and Stage Designer Rumi Matsui, who are the first Asians to receive no less than four Tony Award nominations for the musical Pacific Overtures. I won’t expect anything less with this new production.

Being a fan of Japan’s traditional Taiko, I was utterly impressed by Drum Tao’s modern interpretation during a media preview at the Mediacorp Campus. You can immediately feel the energy bursting from the drums and I found myself tapping along with my feet almost naturally.

Such energy don’t come naturally of course; members of the troupe trained hard as though they are Olympic athletes, with 15km runs every morning, hitting the drums continuously for 60 minutes and work-out sessions that include 500 times of sit ups, push-ups and back extension. This has got to be the special forces training for the art of Taiko.

With 6.5 million viewers and growing and with the production going to Broadway next year, this is the perfect time to catch this highly anticipated show to welcome the new year!
